Iran supports ending the war in Ukraine; US root of Ukraine crisis

Imam Khamenei addressed the people of Iran and Muslims throughout the world in a live televised speech today (March 1, 2022) on the occasion of Eid al-Mab'ath, the day on which Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was appointed to prophethood.

Hawzah News Agency – Imam Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, addressed the people in a televised speech on the occasion of the Be’that of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). His Eminence stated, “Iran advocates ending the war in Ukraine. However, the solution to any crisis only works when the root cause of the crisis has been identified. The root of the crisis in Ukraine are the US policies that create crisis, and Ukraine is one victim of these policies.”

The Leader added, “One of the most important slogans and stances taken by the Holy Prophet in Be’that was confronting ignorance.”

Explaining the concept of “ignorance” [or “jahiliyyah” in Arabic], which has been frequently criticized in the Holy Qur’an, Imam Khamenei explained, “This ignorance that has been mentioned is not merely illiteracy and being unaware. Of course, it encompasses illiteracy as well, but it has a broader meaning. Having a vile temperament is also part of this ignorance. The ignominious conduct of some people, murder, theft, rape, oppression and trampling on the weak, which were all common among the people of the Arabian Peninsula, are some parts of ignorance. It also includes obscenity, sexual chaos, moral decadence and the eradication of modesty among people. Be’that confronted all of these.”

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution emphasized that many types of immorality, which were common among the ignorant Arabs of that time, exist in a more organized, extreme fashion in today’s so-called civilized western world. He stated, “The basis of life in western civilization is greed and avarice. The foundation for all western values rests on money at the present time. Morality, spirituality and everything else are measured with money. Governments’ common policies support discrimination and the enrichment of companies and cartels.”

His Eminence added, “Of course, this modern ignorance is not the same everywhere in the world. A clear, complete example of modern ignorance is the US in my opinion.”

Expanding on the topic of the deplorable situation of the spread of moral decadence in the US and the increasing discrimination in that country, he said: “Basically, the US regime is a regime that generates crises. It feeds on crisis. The mafia networks of power that exist inside the United States feed on the crises that occur throughout the world.”

Describing the US regime as a mafia regime, Imam Khamenei stated, “All sorts of mafias – including political, economic and weapon manufacturing mafias – control that country. Behind the scenes, they bring individuals to power and eliminate others from the field. These mafias even bring presidents to power. This mafia regime has a need for various crises to be ongoing in different parts of the world. Therefore, they create them. Notice how many crises they have created in West Asia.”

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution stressed that DAESH and its crimes were created by that mafia regime. In referring to the issue of Ukraine, he said, “In my opinion, Ukraine is a victim of this policy as well… It was the US that dragged Ukraine to this point. Naturally, interfering in the internal affairs of that country, organizing rallies against governments, launching color revolutions, the presence of American Senators among the demonstrators, and toppling one government and putting another in power lead to such crises.”

His Eminence emphasized that Iran is opposed to war, and he stated, “We are definitely opposed to war and destruction, wherever in the world it may take place. This is our unchanging opinion. We do not agree with killing the people and destroying nations’ infrastructures.”

In referring to the sick logic of the US regime and the killing of innocent people in the name of fighting terrorism, he said, “We are not like the west who claims that dropping bombs on a wedding ceremony in Afghanistan and turning their celebration into a funeral ceremony is fighting terrorism. According to their logic, this is not a crime. Such is their logic in Afghanistan and in Iraq.”

Referring to the US’s ongoing crimes throughout the world, Imam Khamenei posed these major questions: “What is the US doing in eastern Syria? Why is it stealing Syria’s oil? Why do the Americans steal Afghanistan’s money? Why do they usurp Afghanistan’s national wealth? Why do they defend the crimes committed day and night by the Zionists in West Asia?”

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution stated that these actions are carried out in the name of human rights. Expanding on Iran’s position, he said, “We are not like they are that they express a positive opinion with regard to an event when it happens in one area, but express a different opinion regarding a similar event that happens elsewhere.”

Explaining the double standard of the US, His Eminence stated, “It is eight years now that the people of Yemen have been under continual bombardment. The West does not condemn this, on the contrary, they even support it – verbally, with their propaganda, with their media and physical support. This is how they are.”

Repeating his opposition to the war in Ukraine, Imam Khamenei explained that the solution to the crisis lies in identifying its root cause, “The root cause of the Ukraine crisis is the US and western policies. These roots must be recognized and then based on these a judgment can be made. If we wanted to take action, we would do so based on such a judgment.”

At the end of his statements, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution spoke of the lessons that one can learn from the events in Ukraine, “I wish to speak about two of these lessons. One is that the western powers’ support of the governments that they themselves have placed in power is a mirage. It is not true. All governments should realize this.”

His Eminence referred to Ukraine and Afghanistan as being examples of this first lesson. He also spoke about the second lesson one can learn from the events in Ukraine and said, “And the second lesson is that the people are the most important source of support for a government. If the people had been involved in Ukraine, the Ukrainian government and the people would not be in this situation today.”
